1.Введённые Именным Указом "О введении в морском ведомстве отличий на погонах" (ПСЗРИ от 25 ноября 1843г.), нашивки на погоны не предусматривали особых знаков различия для матросов 1-й статьи. Одна поперечная басонная нашивка была установлена для марсовых, рулевых и ефрейторов. Согласно этого Указа можно считать, что на тот момент "Марсовый" и "Сигнальщик" являлись воинскими званиями.

2. Согласно Высочайше утверждённого Положения о довольствии команд морского ведомства по части обмундирования и амуниции (ПСЗРИ от 19 августа 1874г. №53827) звания "Сигнальщик" и "Марсовый" отнесены к специальным званиям (боевым специальностям), наравне со стрелками, комендорами, гимнастами и т.п.. Причем для марсовых была установлена одна поперечная нашивка вверху погона. Для матросов 1-й статьи особых отличий опять-таки установлено не было.
