Summary

Description

The town of Cholpon-Ata on the north shore of Lake Issyk-Kul at the base of the Kungey Ala-Too Range. Lake Issyk-Kul is a popular vacation resort for Kazakhs as Almaty, the former capital and largest city in Kazakhstan, is not far away. Legend has it that Tamerlane (Timur the Lame; 1336-1405) had a summer headquarters here.

Lake Issyk-Kul is the world’s second-largest alpine [altitude above around 5,000 ft/1,524 m] lake after Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and Perú. The lake is slightly saline as it has no outlet. The salinity, the great depth (668 m/2,192 ft), and the presence of thermal activity keep the lake from freezing. The lake creates a mild microclimate in its immediate vicinity.
