Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.1-1.2 m; Height: 65-85 cm; Weight: 35-50 kg; Identification: The most distinguishable feature of a hyena is that its back slopes to the rear. Its coat is dark brown to brown-black in color. Hyenas have a long, lighter-colored mane on their neck and shoulders; Habitat: Dry savannas, plains, semi deserts; Diet: Omnivore: carrion, rodents, birds, reptiles, large wounded animals, insects, eggs, fruit, vegetables; Reproduction: Hyenas have a gestation period of 92-98 days, after which the female bears 2-4 pups. The cubs are weaned at three months of age and will stay with their parents for 18 months. The life expectancy for captive brown hyenas is 13 years; Social Structure: Normally solitary or in family groups, hyenas may gather at carcasses or into a hunting pack; Behavior: Burrows are used to sleep in during the day; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Hyenas are master scavengers and are able to completely digest bone matter. Other indigestible items such as hooves, horns, and hair are regurgitated in pellets.
