Gedung yang terletak di salah satu sisi Waterlooplein (Lapangan Waterloo, sekarang Lapangan Banteng) ini seharusnya adalah Istana Daendels namun tidak pernah selesai. Meskipun demikian, hal ini adalah inisiatif yang penting, karena orang-orang Eropa yang menghuni pusat kota Batavia (Kota Lama) mulai tidak sehat (serangan malaria) dan cenderung pergi dari sana. Sekitar tahun 1900, Weltevreden (sekarang Gambir) mulai dibangun dan selesai sekitar tahun 1920, demikian pula kawasan Menteng, yang terletak lebih jauh ke selatan. Saat ini, orang-orang kaya Indonesia tinggal di sana. Di gedung ini kantor pemerintah Daendels berada dan sekarang masih berdiri (menjadi gedung Departemen Keuangan, namun patung Coen di sebelah kiri sudah disingkirkan sejak masa pendudukan Jepang). Rond 1900 was Weltevreden ook volgebouwd en omstreeks 1920 begon de bouw van huizen in de nog zuidelijker gelegen wijk Menteng. Vandaag de dag wonen daar de rijke Indonesiërs.
