Summary

Description
English: Egg cases - Common Whelk Empty egg cases of the Common Whelk (buccinum undatum) are frequently found on the Chesil bank from this time of year on through the summer months. The Common Whelk is the largest of the Uk's seasnails, indigenous all around our coast. The eggs are laid on rocks in the winter months. The baby whelks hatch and start eating the egg cases of their neighbours which have not yet hatched. The empty adult shell is much sought after by the hermit crab in which to make its home.
