John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford ("Bedford Hours")
Description
John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford (1389-1435), Knight of the Garter, third surviving son of King Henry IV, depicted praying before St George. The saint is dressed in full armour over which he wears a blue mantle on the left shoulder of which is affixed the symbol of the Order of the Garter, dedicated to St George, founded by King Edward III in 1348.
