Summary

Description Lot 2282-4: South Polar Towing Job. While on a mission, towing the submarine USS Sennet (SS 408) toward Scott Island where the submarine could find open water, the Coast Guard’s icebreaker Northwind (WAGB 282) received a radio message that USS Yancey (AKA 93) and USS Mount Olympus (AGC 8) were in danger from floating ice. Northwind dropped her tow temporarily, rushed back to the assistance of the beleaguered vessels, and is shown here towing USS Yancey towards an area of less danger. The effect of crushing ice on a thin-hulled vessel could be disastrous. The Northwind arrived in time to meet and defeat the ice threat. Operation Deep Freeze was from December 1956 to April 1957. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. Official U.S. Coast Guard Photograph. (2015/10/09).
