Release
[edit]Metro...in Dino had a theatrical release on 4th July 2025.[21] It was originally scheduled for a theatrical release on 29 November 2024.[22]
Reception
[edit]Metro... In Dino, directed by Anurag Basu, received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its heartfelt storytelling, ensemble performances, and Pritam's evocative soundtrack, though some noted pacing issues and narrative inconsistencies in the second half.[23] The film, a spiritual sequel to Basu's 2007 film Life in a... Metro, was lauded for its nuanced exploration of modern relationships and urban complexities.[24]
Critics highlighted the ensemble cast's performances. Pankaj Tripathi and Konkona Sen Sharma, portraying Monty and Kajol, were widely praised, with The Hindu describing their chemistry as "electric" and noting their ability to balance humor and depth as a middle-aged couple.[23] Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher's portrayal of an elderly couple navigating love was called "warm, witty, and deeply moving" by News18.[25] Fatima Sana Shaikh and Ali Fazal's arc was appreciated for its emotional resonance, though The Times of India noted it needed tighter writing.[26] Sara Ali Khan's performance as Chumki received mixed reviews; Hindustan Times called her a "show-stealer" for her relatability,[27] while Rediff.com found her overshadowed by styling and inconsistent delivery.[28] Aditya Roy Kapur was noted for his charm but critiqued for a lack of depth in his role.[26]
Pritam's soundtrack was a critical highlight, described as integral to the narrative. India Today stated, "The music doesn’t decorate the film, it defines it," with songs like "Zamaana Lage" and "Aur Mohabbat Kitni Karoon" earning praise.[24] Bollywood Hungama lauded "Dhaagena Tinak Dhin" for its catchy tune and visuals.[29] The film's first half was praised for its humor and unpredictability, with Times Now calling it a "humorous, heartwarming, and feel-good approach to relationships."[30] However, the second half drew criticism for losing momentum and leaving subplots unresolved. The Hollywood Reporter India noted that the film "drifts along in the second half without accomplishing anything substantial."[31] Rediff.com was harsher, labeling it a "meandering mess."[28]
Thematically, the film was appreciated for addressing issues like infidelity, abortion, and LGBTQIA+ representation with sensitivity.[32] Filmfare rated it 3.5/5, commending Basu’s earnest storytelling,[33] while Bollywood Hungama gave it 4/5, calling it a "refreshing, one-of-a-kind musical entertainer.”
