Given the listing of First Nations goverments here, the title at the top of this template should be "First Nations governments on Vancouver Island". "First Nations", by Wiki convention, is for ethnological articles, and "First Nations governments" for band governments and tribal councils, which is what's listed here; there's a big difference, see Talk:Somena and also variously on User:OldManRivers and linked articles from there.Skookum1 00:15, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just created the NTC's article and noticed it's not listed in the template, though all its membeer bands are; also the Pacheedaht First Nation, which is not a member of the NTC, should be listed. The Maa-Nulth Treaty Group also seems to be something that (a) needs an article and (b) should fit in here somewhere, even though its component groups are already present. It strikes me that a breakdown of the listing by Tribal Council-level groupings is also appropriate.Skookum1 00:14, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And there will be another tribal council yet, or two or three, as I finish sorting them all out. As with the previous Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council request for formatting, the KDC bands should be broken off within the template in their own grouping, likewise the Kwakwaka'wakw District Council, as I think it's called though that may redlink; there's a few bands like Pacheedaht that don't belong to any group; we'll see where it all sorts out when I'm done and I'll make a list of who's what and where, and probably will try and compile a BC-wide table of FN governments vs. FN peoples vs FN communities/reserves vs. FN languages to try and have a base where other editors can refer to in sorting out the maze of different layered, and often overlapping, organizations. In this template it may get too cluttered if the treaty groups within the tribal councils are also somehow shown; but they may wind up being regional governments in the long run, I'm not sure.

As for the title change, don't bite my head off; there's a reason for it. First Nations is an ethnography/history article, and there's a need for a First Nations government article to explain the different opinions/sentiments/background of Indian Act-created councils/bands (which all of these are) and the traditional forms of government (chieftaincies in some areas, not so in others); so such an article, which I'll ask User:OldManRivers to help with (he's Skwxwu7mesh/Squamish), is ultimately needed; and gives a point of reference here. If this table listed peoples ethnographically it would be Nuu-chah-nulth-aht, Kwakwaka'wakw, and Island Salish and Straits Salish only (and those last two are kinda shakily-titled); but it's a table of band governments and so should be named as such. There are background issues with this with emerging guidelines within Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America to do with creating clear division between government, reservation, traditional culture/government, language, and NGOs and more, and I'm just trying to bring the BC FNs into context/coordination in line with that.Skookum1 09:33, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Tsawataineuk First Nation and Kwicksutaineuk-ah-kwa-mish First Nation are not on Vancouver Island, although the tribal council they belong to, the Musgamagw Tsawataineuk Tribal Council includes the ‘Namgis First Nation whose territory includes the Nimpkish River/Nimpkish Lake area, but who are themselves located on Cormorant Island adjacent to [[Alert bay]; their original village was at the mouth of the Nimpkish River. So they, technically are a Vancouver Island First Nation, while the other two are not; not sure what to do here as the other Kwakwaka'wakw nations that aren't in the table are not located on Vancouver Island but in the islands of Desolation Sound and the Johnstone Strait etc., but "in context" they should be in this table with the other Kwakwaka'wakw nations; this calls into question the overall title of the template again, although in a different way than the previous item which I went ahead and changed for practical reasons; time to sleep on it...(3:05am).Skookum1 11:01, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
