Welcome!

Hello, Hermione p, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question. Again, welcome!

Also, in order to create your new page on the hotspot project, you may do so at Hotspot Ecosystem Research and Man's Impact On European Seas. -- Burpelson AFB (talk) 01:05, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hotlinking "HERMIONE"[edit]

Generally the first occurrence of a linkable term in an article will be linked; further occurrences will not be. This is especially true for external links with those obtrusive arrow icons. Since the hotlinked HERMIONE website is already the first reference, may I suggest that you need not hotlink "HERMIONE" in the text body to that external link at all? Thanks. References list[edit]

Hi there, I was looking at the HEMIONE article and noticed you removed a couple of references while editing. It's always worthwhile to have more references as opposed to fewer in order to establish Notability and for Independent Verification. Third party sources are crucial for this. That said, if you know of any other newspaper articles, books, journal articles, etc. about this project, please help out by adding them. They don't have to be available online, just be sure to include title, name of the periodical, name of author and date of publication. If you're familiar with standard referencing styles, those work just fine. Happy editing! :-) <>Multi‑Xfer<> (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Multixfer - I will keep adding references. I intend to add a lot more information to this page about the various ecosystems, and will reference as I go along! Best wishes, Hermione p (talk) 11:13, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

Unfortunately, the short name "HERMIONE" alone redirects to the name "Hermione", from which one can follow a link to "Hermione (disambiguation)", where the Hotspot project is listed among other (non-person) namesakes. Not a very direct route, I'm sorry to say.

However, we do now have redirects at Project HERMIONE, HERMIONE project, and HERMIONE Project, straight to your article. This means you could give out a URL like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_HERMIONE rather than the full-length article name, if you wish. Sizzle Flambé (/) 21:36, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Conflict of interest" tag on article[edit]

You'll have noticed the "conflict-of-interest" tag someone added to HERMIONE project. This normally applies when a major contributor to an article has a personal or business interest in the subject. I'm asking the Conflict-of-Interest Noticeboard whether this might not be an exception, since there are no business or financial opportunities offered here, and of course you've been entirely up-front about your participation. See "WP:COIN#FYI: HERMIONE project. Please AGF." Sizzle Flambé (/) 02:54, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, it would be worthwhile to read WP:Conflict of interest, especially the advice there to Editors who may have a conflict of interest, just for caution's sake. Posting a note "declaring an interest" on your userpage and on the article talkpage might help. Adapting your text from WP:ANI, for instance:

Disclosure of interest: I'm participating in and posting about HERMIONE - an EU-funded deep-sea research project, which is looking at "hotspots" (submarine canyons, cold-water coral reefs, seamounts, mud volcanoes etc., which have higher than "background" levels of biodiversity) around the seas of Europe. What I would like to post on Wikipedia is more information about these ecosystems, and what research is being carried out. ~~~~

At WP:COIN, Nihonjoe also suggests that you post thoughts and suggestions for the article on the article's talk page. Does that seem reasonable to you? Sizzle Flambé (/) 05:09, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help Sizzle Flambe. I have put a disclosure of interest up on the discussion page - I hope this helps. I will also put thoughts and suggestions on the talk page - by this I guess you mean suggestions for what other readers/editors could add to the page? Hermione p (talk) 11:13, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Right; and to the extent possible, follow Nihonjoe's advice to ask others to actually edit the article (from your proposals on the talkpage), as a buffer or layer of insulation against the "conflict of interest" question. He seems to think that will help avoid the "COI" pitfalls. Sizzle Flambé (/) 12:09, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see, will do. Thank you Hermione p (talk) 13:11, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now, in case by chance you were not involved in the HERMES project, the stub for that now exists.... Sizzle Flambé (/) 07:55, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tone[edit]

I removed the conflict of interest tag at the top of that article. The advice above is all good though, so definitely follow those suggestions. I'll try to help out if I can. The main thing there was the tone of the article: encyclopedic writing is tricky. It's generally meant to be boring and informative (but if you're clever you can actually structure it so that it's an interesting read). Some of the topics here may be helpful WP:NPOV. Nominated for DYK[edit]

Hermione p, at the suggestion of Burpelson AFB, I have nominated the article Hotspot Ecosystem Research and Man's Impact On European Seas for DYK, so it will be mentioned on the main page. I have listed you as the author, because while Burpelson AFB created the page, he felt that his contributions were not sufficient for him to take credit for the article. Also, it seems that you wrote the bulk of the initial article. Hope the article makes it through. RadManCF (talk) 02:28, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, we'd like to add some images of the geographic locations where the project is working. If you have a minute, could you stop by the article talk page? Burpelson AFB (talk) 03:11, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading images[edit]

If you wish to upload images, please check out Wikipedia:Upload. That should have everything that you need. If you need any assistance, please feel free to contact me. Cheers, NW (Talk) 16:12, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you likewise have rights/permission to upload the HERMES logo? If so, would you, please? Sizzle Flambé (/) 17:20, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
