Assignments
[edit]Hi. Just copied your disclaimer, hope you don't mind. (didn't put in quote, added source but that might drop off if I edit it, ok?) Do you put your specific assignment instructions on Wikipedia? I like to learn from them… Thanks! ProfGray (talk) 15:07, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
- ProfGray Hi! I do not mind at all. I kind of like the disclaimer, though I am still working on it. Let me know if you tweak it and it gets better. All my course materials are public on the web so take whatever you like and modify it. All my course materials are on the Blogger pages for my classes (on the right hand side of my blog). So, in this case, ENG102 and ENG280. The ENG103 version boots up in March. My main-page is here: http://cunygames.blogspot.com Happy Holidays! HullIntegrity (talk) 15:30, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Gandalf's race
[edit]I think within the concept of The Lord of the Rings "Wizard" is good enough for Gandalf's race, he isn't really described as an Ainu in LOTR but it is clear he is not a "Man".
but also the hobbits' chief allies and travelling companions: the Men Aragorn, a Ranger of the North, and Boromir, a Captain of Gondor; Gimli, a Dwarf warrior; Legolas, an Elven prince; and Gandalf, a Wizard.
The text could be improved though as it doesn't flow very well don't you think? GimliDotNet (talk) 16:24, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, it is sort of an awkward sentence overall. I am thinking it over. I really do not like messing with Tolkien articles as there is some tendency for people to "descend" on you, lol. Though in this case, you seem to be the "people". :) HullIntegrity (talk) 16:29, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

copied from AFD
[edit]- Thank you. My issue is that this deletion has potentially serious long-term implications for my students' work. They currently work on award winning-books, so I have had no serious problems as of yet, but I will eventually try to expand the area beyond "award winners" . . . . eventually. There are a lot of awards. Does "it should run its course now" mean I should just shut up? That would be kind of sad. HullIntegrity (talk) 19:11, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Depends. If you have new arguments (or better yet sources) for why the article should be kept as is, then by all means add them. However suggesting that the deletion process be aborted is probably a dead end. As I said, if the article is deleted, that is not the end of the line; you are free to make a copy of the article in WP:DRAFTS where it can be worked on until it is ready (and meets the relevant guidelines). That is a good solution for any other books that may be questionable as well. Books don't necessarily have to win awards to be notable. Thats just an easy way to prove it. If there are significant reviews or commentary in reliable sources, or lots of other ways described in WP:BKCRIT can get things past the bar. Although I personally do not think this book currently meets our standards, we decide things by WP:CONSENSUS here. The closer may well decide there is no consensus in this discussion, which would result in the article being kept by default. Gaijin42 (talk) 19:20, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- User:Gaijin42 So you effectively just said "shut up and camp it until no one cares any longer"? LOL. You do not have to answer that. HullIntegrity (talk) 19:30, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Why did you link my name to ProfGray? No, thats not what I said at all. I said thats a place where you can work on an article until it meets our standards. If you don't like those standards, start an RFC to change them, but they are there for a reason. Lots of people try and use wikipedia as a promotional medium for their books, companies, band, etc. To avoid that problem, we have clear and objective standards for what we include. The book in question doesn't meet those standards. Maybe it will in the future, but that is WP:CRYSTAL. An alternative would be to set up Childrensbooks.wikia.com or something like that dedicated to the topic, where you may set whatever standards you wish. See http://docuwiki.net/ for an example for documentaries, the vast majority of which are not notable enough for a wikipedia article, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth talking about somewhere. I'm trying to explain things to you, and help you. Your snark and combativeness are not appreciated. Gaijin42 (talk) 19:38, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Young Adult Authors
[edit]Actually, on lists like this, a measure of notability is whether there is a Wikipedia article about either the author or the book. Otherwise, vanity press authors will use Wikipedia to promote their books. If you feel this specific author is notable, please include a reference (and fix the typos in the entry). Otherwise, I may re delete them. And I've won multiple awards for my own YA books, but my name was taken off the list as 'non notable' as well. It's pretty subjunctive. [edit]Hi HullIntegrity, just thought i would explain how this came about; i came across the article as an orphan, added some wikilinks, did a little rewrite, then saw the 'deadlink'. Tried to fix it then searched for her name on google and Trove (this is where the article started to unravel?). Sorry, but was unable to leave the article as unable to find notable info on her or her books. I was going to add all this to your talk page and ask if you could find info about Alyse that i could not but had to go to work. I see that you have already added to the debate, thanks. James Whitcomb Riley GA status for childs lit?
[edit]Hi HullIntegrity, was looking at orphans and articles with deprecated parameters and noticed that the Talk:James Whitcomb Riley article has not been assessed by the child lit project. Other projects have given it a ga rating (United States / Indiana, Biography / Arts and Entertainment, and Poetry). Can it also be assigned a ga for child's lit or does it need to go throught the ga nomination process again (i have had a quick look at the edits since the ga assessment and they dont appear to have reduced the article's rating)? in the interim, i have rated it B (looks funny with all the other ga ratings:)) and a mid importance. thanks. Category:Unassessed children and young adult literature articles
[edit]Hi HullIntegrity, sorry i havent sent you any lonely orphans as i have been working on the above for the last week or so, getting thru about 10 to 20 each day. Hopefully it will be at zero in a couple of weeks:) The other day I had a look at the Category:Wikipedia assessment backlog, being a curious cat/kitten. CAT:UNBIO has over 125,000 entries!! So if i had a spare 10 or so years i could start working on them ... maybe not:) Coolabahapple (talk) 06:11, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
A kitten for you! heres another one miaaoooowww - help!
[edit]
Hi HullIntegrity, still going through Unassessed child lit articles and this one was just added by User:Robina Fox - The Nine Lives of Montezuma. i was going to assess it as stub/low but as it is about a cat, thought i would improve it, but the only stuff i can find on it are kids/amateur(?) blog reviews (there are heaps of them!) and some seller sites, so the wikideleter in me is saying it should be afdd, but its a book about a cat! Are you able to help in finding some notable refs? thanks:) ps. this kitten pic is saying 'Pweeeeze don dewlete me!' :))
Coolabahapple (talk) 23:37, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
- Coolabahapple Thank you! Love my LOL cat. :) I have seen stuff from Robina that is fine, so I will check to see if it a "draft in progress" tomorrow. Totally whipped today. HullIntegrity\ talk / 01:54, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hmmm. Robina did not originate the article but has worked on it recently. I would not AFD it at this point. But I will add it to my watch list to see what is going on. It looks very "in progress" (like one of my students' early stubs). Plus it is a book about a CAT! HullIntegrity\ talk / 02:08, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- I will ask Robina what is up with that article. HullIntegrity\ talk / 12:54, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- as im sure you have seen, i added a Reception with a couple of reviews, not sure if they are notable, but if they are okay (although i would suggest they would be seen by most wikieditors as WP:USERG) some of the other reviews might just squeak (where are the cute wikimouse pics?:)) over the line. will continue looking (and hoping:)) Coolabahapple (talk) 13:20, 20 March 2015 (UTC) ps. thx for the kitten!

And see what a week I've had since then, thank you! My head is spinning from it all and I keep trying to stay away from Nepal (lovely country, weird editors) but getting drawn back. I've just done a blitz of an edit on Myanglung Campus, deleting a lot of inappropriate content, without realising that MN had edited it just half an hour previously. He mentions his edits on Phuwatapa Village but hasn't edited that since 9 April under his user name - there's been a new editor and an IP editing it today (and I've already mended it after one of the edits broke the brackets of {{mi}}). Hi hullIntegrity, I have just assessed the above article for child lit and saw on the talk page that it is one of your Education Program:CUNY, LaGuardia Community College/ENG103: The Research Paper (A Newbery Medal Project) (Spring 2015). However, i couldn't see it listed there! The creator of the article is User:Itsromeo who is listed as working on Lauren Barnholdt, which you are working on(?), and Alice Lide. Just thought you would like to know:) Coolabahapple (talk) 11:10, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hey @Coolabahapple:! I always like hearing from you. That particular class (a research class) is working on creating 4 stubs per student at the moment, but the Edu page for my class no longer allows us to add more than one project for them at a time, which I consider an incidental "enforcement" of unwritten and non-consensus policy, but I am saving that argument for later. Does that answer the question? And, yes, I do like to know things, so your observations are always very welcome. :) HullIntegrity\ talk / 14:20, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Coolabahapple:-- Just a quick follow up. That issue seems to have been (mysteriously) resolved and the students will have all the articles they are working on (again, 4-5 each) listed on the course page hopefully by Tuesday. That will really simplify my life! We will, of course, add categories and banner them all as well (as time allows). Cheers, HullIntegrity\ talk / 14:57, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @HullIntegrity:, thanks for the info. p.s. i have finished going thru the unassessed child lit articles and are now ploughing thru the stubbies, starting at the low imports (see the Current article statistics at Wikipedia:WikiProject Children's literature, yoohoo!) to see if their assessments need updating and doing any little fixes. Of course any caldie/newbie medal articles i come across i will let you know:) Coolabahapple (talk) 06:06, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Hi HullIntegrity, i have recently been bumping into articles which are listed in the above program, but not all of them have the ed program tag on their talk pages (some didn't have talk pages and/or child lit/women writers projects) so i've gone thru them and added whatever was needed (i haven't checked the articles listed under your name as i reckon the boss should know what he is doing:)). Hope this is ok. Coolabahapple (talk) 17:39, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Coolabahapple: -- Go for it! Any help is useful. I do not want my students working with code out of class unless they are very proficient and, as this is a hybrid/online class we only meet for 2 hours a week, so very few of them will work on the code without me or my in-class Wiki-rep looking over their shoulder. The most recent class meeting was for coding (adding categories and adding banners) but we had low attendance due to unusually nice weather. Hi HullIntegrity, i have just reassessed the above article from stub to start class, i was tempted to grade it 'c' but am quite conservative (some may say eccentric:)) in the way i assess articles eg. if it ain't got an infobox it probably won't get past stub (yes, i know they're not required but i like them, saying this with trepedation, awaiting the backlash from antiboxers:)). That said, i have saved it on my computer as an example of a good solid wikiarticle for when i commence swamping wiki with my own child lit book articles. ps. i hope you had a great wikiholiday and look forward to seeing more of your great contributions. Coolabahapple (talk) 04:27, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- Coolabahapple Hey! I am back online. I think "start" works and please be conservative. I might prefer an editor outside our "loop" to upgrade it further; but that may be me being silly and perhaps unlikely. In amy case, I am gearing up for the semester. :) HullIntegrity\ talk / 14:28, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. A videographer will be present to record 1-3 minute Mini-Videos of folks informally speaking, sharing anything about their Wikipedia-related projects, whether an edit-a-thon they joined, an article they edited, or a class project they were a part of, etc. We will also follow up on plans for recent (Art+Feminism!) and upcoming edit-a-thons, and other outreach activities. We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. We will also place our chapter's votes for the global Wikimedia Foundation board. After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!
We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 14:20, 6 April 2016 (UTC) |

Saturday April 30: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa @ Guggenheim
[edit]Saturday April 30, 1-6pm: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa @ Guggenheim | |
---|---|
![]() On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Can’t join us in New York? Visit our global MENA Artists Month partnership page to coordinate international and online events as well.

Sunday June 5: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon
[edit]Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon | |
---|---|
![]() Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand. Light refreshments will be provided. Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!
Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 15:02, 1 June 2016 (UTC) P.S. Stay tuned / sign up early for our June 15 WikiWednesday and other upcoming events. |
