Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 18:13, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I always forget this. This is my first week editing Wikipedia. I'll try to do a better job. Thanks for the heads up!--MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 17:07, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

??????Not sure how this works, I was trying to respond to your recent msg about the Pigeon fever page, thanks for cleaning it up. Not sure how to chat with you or email you so I figured I would try and type here and maybe you would find it? I am horseman with lots of years in horses, so I see that I can't cite actually experience for my contributions, so over the years I have read, studied and researched horses, I have testified in court as a horse expert and can explain my opinions and beliefs but can't cite past experience. I was wondering if Wiki would consider a lifetime experience or expert Opinion section on a page? I am sure it would be a pain to control and to prove who is really knows and who just think they know. Just a thought. I notified from my horse site that no Pigeon Fever page was on wiki, so that is why I tried to create.

thanks again for help, not sure how to sign either, I guess I just put my username : rickgore — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickgore (talkcontribs) 21:11, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding wikilinks[edit]

Hi MrNiceGuy1113. Please be sure you are familiar with guidelines about overlinking. For example, it is rare that [[North America]] should be wikilinked. Thanks! Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 16:26, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for April 27[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited Chaplain, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Minister (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wikipedia Help Survey[edit]

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. Hello - on May 30/12, you made a significant improvement to the article Comares. At the end of the section titled "History", you wrote, "It was considered one of the strategic points of the Rayya (Archidona), then capital of the taha of Malaga." The issue is that taha is an ambiguous word, and I cannot figure out what meaning of the word fits the sentence. Can you please revisit the article and clarify the word/link - perhaps if it's a Spanish word, a translation to an English equivalent would be a good substitute? Coordinates[edit]

First of all, thanks for helping to add coordinates to articles that lack them; your work is appreciated. However, the [[Coord}} template does not accept names such as "Nova Scotia" or "Serbia" as parameters; you need to be using "region:XX", where XX is one of the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes listed here (or an ISO 3166-2 code for a subregion within one of the countries). For more about the various parameters used in the template, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Implementation details. Deor (talk) 21:22, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

sourced language articles[edit]

Hi,

Most of our language articles are sourced through their info boxes, so I'm reverting your recent tagging. I've submitted several bot requests as part of a wiki project to make the refs more obvious, but that proved controversial and was never done. — kwami (talk) 09:29, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redlinks[edit]

Just a courtesy note that I have reverted your edit. Please review Wikipedia:Red link before removing further redlinks. Schwede66 23:07, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, in this edit you added a DEFAULTSORT and two categories, but didn't get it quite right in either case.

The Defaultsort should be the place someone will look in an A-Z listing for something. No-one looks under "The" or "A", so it's the way to make sure that this film will be listed under "Still". Unfortunately you specified the defaultsort as "The Still Point", which is just what we don't want it to file under.

You also gave the two categories Category:Film and Category:Australia. Both of these are enormous categories with hundreds of subcategories, and not particularly useful for someone trying to find this and similar articles. Category:Australian films or one of its subdivisions is much more useful.

There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey. Happy Editing! PamD 09:30, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in App Map, makes articles harder to read. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. More specifically, please read WP:RED to familiarize yourself with the policies regarding red-links. WingtipvorteX PTT 22:57, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Platypleura arabica, which you Page Curated[edit]

When an article starts off with non-Wiki style prose like "A common sight on trees and bushes in summer months, the Arabian cicada (Platypleura arabica) is also well known throughout its range" and includes numbers which look like references but aren't, it's worth checking to see if it's a copyright violation. Pick a distinctive phrase, like "Arabian cicada has sucking" and google it with quotes around it ... in this case we find an exact match for the whole of the article, so it's a case for CSD G-12 as a blatant copyright violation. Worth checking when you're doing Page Curation. PamD 22:27, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pam, thank you very much for sharing this tip with me, much appreciated!

Will keep in mind for the future. Regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 12:38, 20 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Couple of problems[edit]

Careful with the unreferenced tags. Both Anastasia Chernova and Class of 1952 Stadium had references. Anastasia Chernova also had categories, so uncategorized shouldn't have been added either. Also, DEFAULTSORT goes after PERSONDATA. I see PamD has been bugging you too. As she said, there is alot to learn around here and it takes time. You are doing a good job and don't get discouraged. Only 4,304,583 things left to learn :)

You correctly added the unreferenced tag to Bribri Sign Language and the creating editor removed it improperly. I re-added. You may want to watch that for the next few days. Give me a yell if you run problems with that article. If you ever have questions PamD is a great person to ask or bug me anytime. Bgwhite (talk) 05:26, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is referenced. Not much of a reference, but it references additional references. More than adequate for a one-line stub. — kwami (talk) 06:17, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The "reference" should not only be used as an external link in the infobox, please use proper referencing. Only having where it is located makes it very hard to see the article is referenced. Bgwhite (talk) 06:26, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Bgwhite, thank you for taking the time to tell me about where I went wrong, I always appreciate feedback on my work. My apologies for the miss categorizations, sometimes I just get into a flow and miss an obvious thing here and there (but not often :-)). As for your other points, about DEFAULTSORT and Persondata, this won't happen again and thanks once more for showing me. Kindest regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 12:59, 20 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Back bugging you again[edit]

I'm starting to talk to you more than my wife. I'm not complaining because not talking to my wife is a good thing. :)

In Ahn Yong-joon, the sort value is DEFAULSORT:Ahn, Yong-joon per WP:SUR.

Careful on Asian and other names. Most are pretty straightforward, but others can get downright tricky. Arabic and if particles (van, de) are used at all can get tricky. WP:NAMESORT has the rules, but give a yell if you have any questions. Bgwhite (talk) 07:32, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ha ha, some wives can be as tricky as an Asian name... Thanks Bgwhite, apologies for making more work for you!

Take care, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 07:39, 22 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Back again too![edit]

Hi, When you add {{stub}} to an article as you did here, please use lower case "s" not capital "S". A stub-sorter will be along soon to amend it to something like {{Connecticut-school-stub}}, and it saves a couple of keystrokes if we don't have to retype that letter! Thanks. PamD 10:57, 22 October 2012 (UTC

And: I see that you tried to add Category:Casino to Rivers Casino (Des Plaines) before going for the more general Category:Gambling. Most categories about people or objects use the plural, so Category:Casinos would have been OK, and I found Category:Casinos in Illinois as a refinement of that one. There's always more to learn! PamD 11:15, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invalid AfD - 1940's in Denmark[edit]

Note: actually 940s in Denmark, for benefit of any other talk-page stalkers who are curious. Just out by a millennium and an apostrophe! PamD 16:33, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know your AfD tag for the article 1940's in Denmark is removed due to it not conforming to the guidelines for AfD nominations. Please review these before recommending further AfD's. The reason your article for deletion tag was invalid is because the item you nominated is in first stage development and not complete. Olowe2011 (talk) 14:13, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thank you for sharing. In that case you will probably find a few more like that in the pile for nomination. However, in my defense I will say that it should have had a notice that it was in the process of being worked on, correct? Also, please don't send me any notices in relation to the other tags I added. Kindest regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 14:16, 28 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]
You said "It doesn't say anything really, does it?", but it had some valid content: it told us the monarch. It is one of a whole pattern of "year in" and "decade in" pages, which don't always contain a lot of information but are valid pages. I've tidied up its redlinked categories. PamD 16:43, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But it doesn't say anything really, it has mostly empty boxes and one wikilink. And, no notice that it was underway to being expanded. It was one of a litany that I found. Many new pages were created on the same theme, with only one link each. "Some" is more than one. I know year in and decade in pages are usually sparse and just a compilation of events and figures, but these all just contained "one" item and nothing else, not even a notice... Anyway, that's my defense. Regards to all, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 17:09, 28 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Hi, I seem to find a lot of your patrolled articles, because I do quite a lot of stub-sorting! I noticed that you added a DEFAULTSORT to this one: great, but... WP:NAMESORT tells us that the "III" should go after the Philip in the sort key. It figures: in an A-Z list you'd want all the Ludwells together, then all the Philip Ludwells, before sorting on the "III". I've fixed it, but thought I'd point it out. Just another little thing to learn (that NAMESORT section is interesting reading - I messed up an Icelandic politician lately, forgetting their special rules!)

Actually I deleted almost the whole article, as it was straight copyvio from the cited source - but he sounds an interesting chap so I wrote a couple of sentences, sourced from that source. PamD 09:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seems indeed he was a bit of a unique charchter, so it should have been correct?

Thanks for taking the time to share with me Pam, and for seeing the copyviolations! (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 09:15, 30 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

ADD YOUR CAPTION HERE

I'll let you now put it in, if any problems give me a shout. Well done for finding the pic' and for getting it up on wikimedia commons! Regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 19:11, 31 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Perihan S. (talk) 21:09, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Perihan, well done, looks much nicer (as always) with a picture. Gotta love those old pictures eh?

Also I took the liberty of reworking the article a little, with copyediting and dividing to give more structure and flow to the information.

What you think, better?

Usurping a link[edit]

Hi MrNiceGuy1113,

May I call you MNG? :)

First, thank you very much for your assistance in editing the "Neohumanism (liberation of intellect)" page. I especially liked the bolding of the first word in the article (definitely your work) and the addition of page rating and categories (possibly your addition).

In the days or weeks to come, I am sure this article will be expanded. However, there is one major task that needs to be done that I have not figured out how to do. Currently, a search on Wikipedia for Neohumanism takes you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neohumanism#Neohumanism, which is just a small paragraph within a larger article on the propounder of this philosophy, Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar. I have added a link (a 'redirect'?) at the top of that small paragraph to the main article, which is Neohumanism (liberation of intellect). However, it would make much more sense if a Wikipedia search for "Neohumanism" took one directly to the main article. Hence, I would like to edit the titles and destinations for the two links (Neohumanism and Neohumanism (liberation of intellect)), essentially reversing them. I understand this is possible. I believe it is called "usurping a link". However, I have not been able to figure out how to do this. Could you please assist me with the process?

--Abhidevananda (talk) 06:51, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Abhidevananda,

Hope you are well. Thank you for your words and taking the time to consider me for your question. However I am sorry to say I don't have an answer to this valid question. But I did ask someone more knowing than myself, so I will await her message. Please feel free to ask anything else.

Oh and yes, you may call me MNG.

Kindest regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 07:05, 1 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]

MNG, I haven't had much luck asking others. Waited on the Help chat line for well over an hour without a single response to a much easier question there. So, for now at least, I'll just wait for the reply you get from the person you asked. Thanks for taking the trouble. Other than this matter, I happily do not have any other current questions/problems (Wikipedia-related).

--Abhidevananda (talk) 08:45, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As the "someone more knowing" ...
Let's look at the situation:
All a bit of a mess. I note that the new article, or something similar by the same editor, has been declined at AfC twice - I haven't examined it carefully to see whether the reviewer's concerns have been addressed, I'm just looking at navigation here.
I've just tidied up the hatnote at New Humanism and the disambiguation page at New Humanism (disambiguation)
We need to move the new article to Neohumanism. It cannot be done immediately, because the title "Neohumanism" is already occupied, by the redirect, and that redirect has been edited since it was created (it has actually pointed to a couple of different places over the years). If the redirect had never been edited, I could have simply moved the article over.
If anyone could plausibly argue that the new article should not be at that title (as opposed to arguind that it should not exist, which is a separate issue), then we would have to use the WP:RM Requested Move process. But I consider that this is a "non-controversial move", so I have now used {{db-move}} to request that the redirect be deleted so that the article can be moved to that title. I have watch-listed the redirect. An admin will in due time deleted the redirect. Admin practice varies: some will then make the follow-on article move, and others don't see it as their job to do so!
I have added a hatnote to the new article, directing to the disambiguation page for other uses.
I have altered the Neo-humanism redirect to point to the new article: when the article is moved, this will become a double redirect, which a bot will sort out into a single redirect.
I think that just about wraps it up! I've explained what I'm doing, partly to clarify it for myself but also so that you can both see what's going on, as an educational exercise! I hope we've now got it all sorted out, just waiting for an admin to delete the redirect. And the link in the PRS article will need to be updated, although the page move will create an automatic redirect from old title to new (ie from Neohumanism (liberation of intellect) to Neohumanism, so it's not the end of the world if that link doesn't get updated immediately as it will still work.
So there we are, I hope. PamD 16:40, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pam, thank you very much. Like you, I believe that this should be a non-controversial move. Certainly, no one who subscribes to Shrii Sarkar's Neohumanism will object to the move, given that the new article is much more informative, and having a dedicated article offers more scope to discuss the philosophy. No one else should object, because the Wikipedia link to "Neohumanism" already goes to the very same subject.

Your hatnote is a helpful addition to the Neohumanism article. Thank you for that.

When all of this is done, I will have one last not-at-all-urgent problem, which will be to rename the article "Neohumanism (liberation of intellect)" to simply "Neohumanism"... if that does not happen automatically. Even if it is not automatic (that is, part of the process of usurping a link), I suppose that it is probably a lot easier than usurping a link. Pam, perhaps you or MNG would kindly explain this point when you get a moment.

Again, thank you kindly to both of you - Pam and MNG - for your very helpful assistance.

--Abhidevananda (talk) 18:09, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that's more than a mouthful of work that that involved. Thank you Pam for taking up the mantle. I hope someday I too may be as knowledgeable.

copyediting[edit]

Question on tagging of pages[edit]

I notice some tagging of pages as orphans that have incoming links, for example [1] and [2], both of which have more than five links. The tools you using showing false information? --Traveler100 (talk) 18:23, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Traveller,

Thanks for taking the time to get onto me. Firstly I am not using any tool other than my eyeball (and the "new pages feed").

Secondly. I don't see a single link/wikilink in the main-body of either two article. Madley has some in his infobox.

Regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 08:14, 2 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]

(talk page stalker)Are you confusing {{Orphan}} (no incoming links) with {{deadend}} and {{underlinked}} (No, or too few, links from the article to other articles)?
It's also clearer if you indent each paragraph of a comment to the same depth of indent! PamD 08:19, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Pam, one of those articles has NO links so it is an {orphan}, while the other has a some in the infobox only, which to :me would still make it {orphan}, yet I would accept it could be {underlinked}.
Do you see no links on either of the two articles main-bodies either?
Regards,
(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 08:27, 2 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]
No, please read the definitions: an "Orphan" is an article where you click on "What links here" and there are no mainspace articles shown as linking to it. "Deadend" and "Underlinked" are the tags to use where there are not enough links in the article itself.
The Madley article had a load of other problems ... PamD 08:43, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so, if it has nothing, or not enough, to other wikipedia articles then it is a "deadend" or "underlinked". Sorry :for asking what seems to be the obvious Pam, but I find the definitions and criteria provided (for most topics/tags/whatevers) as always vague or confusing in their definition.

Maybe you should slow down and read a bit more. If you look at the Page Curation window, it gives a definition for each tag: Orphan is defined as "This page is linked to from few or no other pages.",and Deadend as "This page has few or no links to other pages." (there's a bit of confusion as to whether Deadend includes pages with "few" links, and there's a new tag "underlinked"). If you don't understand what you are doing, please stop doing it until you do! If you find those descriptions confusing, use the Page Curation talk page to suggest a better wording. Wikipedia:Glossary might help in some cases, though "Underlinked" isn't yet included. Persondata and Defaultsort[edit]

How do you add persondata and defaultsort? AWB? Any script or manually? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chaiti_Ghoshal&curid=37576509&diff=521971822&oldid=521964825 Ref] --Tito Dutta (talk) 09:34, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, for the persondata I use the template from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Persondata and as for defaultsort just :type {{DEFAULTSORT:Last name, First name}} and that's it :-)

Kindest regards, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 09:36, 8 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]

  • (talk page stalker) I use {{lifetime}}, abbreviated to "l", in {{subst:l|birthdate|deathdate|sortkey}} - eg {{subst:L|1901|1999|Bloggs, Joe}} or {{subst:L|||Bloggs, Joe}}, which adds the DEFAULTSORT and the birth and death date categories. If deathdate is empty it adds Category:Living people (you can add "missing" or "unknown" if they're dead but no date is available - the former where it should be findable, the latter if not, eg historic person). It's a useful shortcut. PamD 12:31, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Pam!

(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 12:51, 8 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]

{{lifetime}} is actually depreciated and shouldn't be used. You won't find it on any articles. It actually gets DEFAULTSORT wrong on non standard cases and doesn't add all the information Persondata does. I think Persondata will be depreciated within the next year when WikiData is fully on-line, but that is just a personal opinion.
{{DEFAULTSORT:Last name, First name}} is not always the case. There are a ton of permutations. Look at WP:NAMESORT for the grizzly details. I essentially wrote the section, so if you have questions on a DEFAULTSORT value, just ask. Bgwhite (talk) 18:38, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The answers just keep on flowing... Thanks Bgwhite!

(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 18:52, 8 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]

  • There's nothing at {{lifetime}} to say that it's deprecated, but I only use it with "subst" so it disappears as soon as I've saved the article. As far as I know, PERSONDATA doesn't generate the birth and death date cats: does it create a sort key? I thought an article needed DEFAULTSORT and date cats as well as PERSONDATA: am I wrong there?
For more on the details of what should be in the DEFAULTSORT, see WP:NAMESORT - re Icelandic names etc! PamD 20:41, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Any article that shows up with lifetime gets redone with persondata and appropriate cats. I know of a few bots and individuals who do this. So, instead of a person adding lifetime, use persondata and appropriate cats as more information gets added. For example, "short description" in persondata is a required parameter, but lifetime doesn't add it. It also doesn't add birth place and death place either. All I'm saying is lifetime doesn't add everything, so somebody else ends up adding it in. It's better to do it for oneself. Bgwhite (talk) 21:43, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do a lot of stub-sorting, and I add the above items when they're missing, in the quickest and most convenient way, which is the use of {{subst|l}}. I'm not realy interested in adding a whole complicated template with compulsory fields, so I'll continue as I'm doing unless someone shows me a very good reason not to! map size (infobox settlement)[edit]

You recently made changes to several pages I have just put up, e.g. Yao Islet, reducing the map size to 350. Is there any (unspoken) law about that? I made them all 768 which is my maximum client width, because the features are very small and otherwise unviewable. Is there a better way of doing it, invoking Location map Bantayan directly?
I don't like changes made without any explanation, seemingly on whim, and within my definition of vandalism. Johnmperry (talk) 01:02, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mr. Perry. Yes I did make the changes. I agree firstly that it would be best if there was a map with a closer frame. ::However, my reasoning for doing was that people truly interested in the article and are there to research something then they just ::have to click on the map and it would open in another tap full view, no?
The way the article was presented made it about a map, it was the first instant thought when the page appeared. The actual ::article and information, along with any other information that another contributor puts would be simply lost to a map. In my ::work as a magazine editor I was always trained to avoid such layout.
However, if you would like your article to look like that, then you are free to change it, I worked on an observation. An ::observation to streamline the article. I won't re-change or take anything further.

Hello MrNiceGuy1113. Thank you for your contribution to Archduke Joseph (diamond). But seriously I don't think the inclusion of the picture of Archduke Joseph is such a great idea. People go to the article to learn about the diamond. If they want to know about Archduke Joseph August of Austria there is a link in the article that points to his own article. What should go there is a picture of the diamond if you can find a non-copyrighted one. Basemetal00 (talk) 11:12, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed Basemetal00, I put in the picture anyway to make the article a little more engaging. However, I have no issue with it being ::removed... now, where can we find an image, any thoughts?
Kindest regards,
(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 11:22, 14 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]
Well all the news organisations and newspapers (AP, Reuters, BBC, etc.) carried a picture of this diamond. Problem is, are we allowed to use those pictures? Do you know, or do you know someone who knows? If we're not allowed to, I will do a little research as to where whoever obtained the pictures of other diamonds (e.g. Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, etc.) obtained them. At worst we could obtain an old, historical, photograph of the Archduke Joseph, one from before the diamond was slightly recut in the 1990s. But that's ok, as long as we clearly annotate the picture as a historical one, of the diamond before it was recut. Basemetal00 (talk) 12:01, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would say there is not much point with the main agencies. Is there a "helpdesk" at wikicommons I wonder? Or maybe direct to :Christies as they would have had a catologue, no?
Anyway. Wishing you the best with the hunt!

Stub sorting[edit]

Recently, I've been working on WikiProject Stub Sorting, moving articles marked as {{stub}} to more specific stub categories so that people who know about a specific topic can focus on stubs about that topic. I noticed that you've tagged a lot of articles (at least 45) with a generic {{stub}}, which makes more work for stub sorters. A (mostly) complete list of all available stub types can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting/Stub_types. A userscript which makes finding stub categories easier is available at User:MC10/stubtagtab.js. — Wolfgang42 (talk) 03:24, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of Plantation Great Houses in Jamaica[edit]

Greetings MNG. While curating List of Plantation Great Houses in Jamaica you tagged it with {{lead too short}}. Do you have any concrete suggestions for what more the lede should contain? In my experience, "List" articles often have exactly such very simple openings. -Arb. (talk) 16:19, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind; Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Stand-alone_lists#Lead covers it. -Arb. (talk) 16:23, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Arb,
Apologies, ou are right, I should have put a suggestion to the talk page. Simply put my feeling is that a little explanation to :what a plantation house is. I understand to some degree as my ancestry is Irish, who suffered a lot though "plantations" both :within Ireland and abroad to places like Jamaica, am I correct that we are talking about the same types of plantations? I just felt :that the opening lead section didn't quiet explain what a plantation house was, was it a work house or simply just a plantation :where items were grown?
Kindest regards to you Arb and many thanks for pointing out my own failing!

Tagging on creation[edit]

User Gnangarra and others are involved in an edit a thon regarding a project which has been held today - to tag articles on creation (or within 10 minutes of creation ) is way well beyond WP:AGF and allowing created articles to be adequately edited... also to follow them (the articles) with tags is outright bad faith... try looking seeing how many edits have been made by a user, also check to see - yes, he is an admin - very unlikely to create a taggable offence... best to investigate a bit further before tagging anything... SatuSuro 09:17, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the advise SatuSuro. It would however be nice if you could give me a specific example about which article we are talking about. The beauty of wikipedia and tagging is that they can be removed very easily, no? Yes there are some excellent contributors on here who do excellent work, there is however many others who only do a half-good job and then leave it. So I apologise if I have stepped on somebody's toes. But if I may point out it is very easy for any contributor to add a tag to the article saying that it is in the process of being expanded and worked on, so people like us know to give the contributor the space :to continue their work uninterrupted, no?
It is good practice for anybody who takes their writing seriously to read their material properly before posting, to make sure things like minor copyedits and language are not missed. And any contributor can easily remove a tag when they return to finish their work. I will heed your advise and stay away from any article that is freshly created.
Kindest regards to you and again thank you for the comment and advise.
(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 10:20, 1 December 2012 (UTC))[reply]

It appears that english is not your native language - repeated usage of the spelling of advise is a dead giveaway, as well as non-conventional usage of colons (the puns in relation to colonoscopy are not printable) - offering advice (sic) to long standing editors on the project with large edit counts is simply naive and foolhardy SatuSuro 23:46, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

please see List of heritage places in Fremantle every single article I created today is on that list, every item on that list is on the register of heritage places, which includes world heritage sites, the base of each article was started on that single source in the template {{COF plaques}}. I'm sure you can appreciate the amount of time, cost and work that goes into running a series of workshops and how unwelcoming to new editors who are being guided through the process such tagging is, its also very unprofessional response that reinforces all the bad things our partners have heard about working with Wikimedians. All of these articles will be expanded, additional sources added they have not been abandoned, I'm sure 7+ years of editting and having written FA's, authored FP's garners me a little WP:AGF in that articles I create during a workshop wont be abandoned. I not sure how many workshops or training session you've run but sometimes creating simple fixes is a better way to engage some new editors rather than having them starting articles from scratch. These articles are being written to be linked to QR codes which will be placed on each building see Freopedia project, feel free to chip in and help expand the articles rather than just throw tags around there's plenty of sources available digitally(online) thru National Archives of Australia. While we can all get the odd spelling wrong, SatuSoro's got a point in querying your unusual use of colons: I don't know whether they're meant for emphasis, or as the equivalent of quote marks, or what, as they aren't used like that in any register of written English with which I'm familiar. It might be better to stop using colons in this way. Thanks. (And remember to check that you've indented all the paragraphs you mean to indent, including your signature!) PamD 09:34, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It seemed more than just a query about my irrational use of colons, more like a shot at my own colon? Anyway I'm not here to get into a childish slugging match about colons and colonoscopies. Simply, I had put the colons (:) in front of each sentence to create the indentation, as opposed to just at the start of the paragraph, I have removed them now. I made the faux pas in error after trying to figure out SatuSoro's message. If people had seen my same text after clicking "edit" it would have been easily spotted that I had put them (:) at the start of each sentence as opposed to writing in some neu-style. Anyway folks, lets all move on to better things.
Many thanks,

Hi there[edit]

Hi, just wanted to drop you a quick note to ask if you could remove AfC tags when patrolling new pages. I noticed that when you patrolled False diffusion you left the AfC tag in place, and it really doesn't want to be present on articles in the mainspace. If you don't know what I'm talking about you can check the diff in the edit history to see what I removed. Thanks. Pol430 talk to me 17:26, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pol430, thank you for taking the time to get onto me. However, I am at a loss to understand what an "Afc tag" is. I have checked over the previous and the current one, but still fail to see. I would appreciate if you had the patience to explain to me a bit further.
Kindest regards and many thanks,
(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 17:58, 9 December 2012 (UTC))[reply]
No problem. If you have a look at this edit I made, you can see I removed some commented-out text and, more importantly, an AfC tag — that's the bit of Wikicode that looks like this: {{AFC submission|||ts=20121204070109|u=Msiitmandi|ns=2}}. When you save a page with that piece of code on it, it produces an AfC tag — which looks like the tag you can see at the bottom of this page (scroll to the bottom). They are used to keep track of AfC submissions, they should be removed when a submission gets transfered into the main article space, but sometimes they get left in place. If they don't get removed from the article then that article sits on the AfC 'pending submissions' list for ever — which is annoying... Hope that answers your question? :-) Pol430 talk to me 19:11, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I get you now and understand what the tag means and looks like. Thank you for taking the time to help with clearing that up. I will keep an eye out in future so for such tags.
Again, many thanks

But if I may ask, why are you pointing this article out to me when it appears from the edit-history that you didn't create it or do any of the expanding, it's not a concern, just a curiosity that I have.

HMS Galatea[edit]

Your additions are a marked improvement to the article! I have some concerns about the external links used for attribution, as they do not constitute a reliable source, but there is no really compelling urgency to replace the refs, given that the content is decidedly non-controversial. I'll see ifh the Times' archive might yield anything of value. Anyway, even though it's not "my" article, I really appreciate the courtesy of your message :-). I've been meaning to return to some of my earliest contributions, given that the articles in question are invariably unsourced and in dire need of attention, but my activity on Wikipedia has been severely curtailed these past few years. That's been frustrating, to say the least. Happy editing and very happy holidays! SoLando (Talk) 14:32, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SoLando, Thank you for taking the time to check my work and to reply. I agree with your observations about the references, both that they are not the world's best and also that it is not the world's most controversial topic. As it didn't really participate in any "major" event what was available online was not a lot. The Times have an archieve? Most interesting, could you send me the link? It could be most valuable and useful for any future work.

Stub tagging[edit]

Please avoid using the national tag at all costs. In almost all circumstances, there is no legitimate reason to use it, and it shows a lack of care for detail in nuances that much of the media shameless displays in their depiction of Chinese geography. In light of this, if I see one more {{China-stub}} added, I will revert it on sight. The correct template is {{PROVINCE-geo-stub}}. GotR Talk 18:44, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just use {{FOO-geo-stub}}, replacing FOO, of course, with the provincial-level division, which is, in my creations, always the field after "Country: People's Republic of China". Otherwise, you are wasting your own time figuring out which stub templates exist. GotR Talk

Probably[edit]

what you need to do is to read edit histories very very carefully - I did not write the Suharto article - simply did a few very small maintenance issue edits. SatuSuro 14:41, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will do that in the future.
(MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 14:48, 15 January 2013 (UTC))[reply]
First todays edits were simply creating the new sub-article : -http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Early_life_and_career_of_Suharto&action=history
Before that - the main article: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Suharto&action=history
Then if you are really keen - http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Contributors.php?wikilang=en&wikifam=.wikipedia.org&grouped=on&page=Suharto - includes many editors no longer with us - banned, blocked, lost and disappeared editors amongst that lot...
But that is nothing compared to the people actually looking at the main article... http://stats.grok.se/en/latest90/Suharto

compared to the new article... http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/Early_life_and_career_of_Suharto

So you should have a better idea of who to even consider when you look at an article from those points of view SatuSuro 15:10, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. This will definitely make it easier for me.
Kindest regards

Adding sections to articles[edit]

Hello MrNiceGuy1113,

I have noticed that you kept on adding irrelevant or useless sections or simply tagging section templates on my articles. Can you please stop doing them, especially when my articles are too short? Two or three paragraphs in my articles do not mean that they are necessary for building a section. Think again.

Thank you! Raymarcbadz (talk) 10:21, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Point noted. It will not happen again.

Lead too long[edit]

For articles like Pardey Lukis, {{lead too long}} does not apply because there is no lead. That's the whole article. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:30, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Crisco. I will certainly keep that in mind from now. Thank you for pointing this out.

I'm back to make life miserable[edit]

I've been away from your talk page too long. I feel like you need someone to give you a hard time. :)

Careful again on the DEFAULTSORTS. This edit you forgot it was an Asian name. Also there needs a space after the comma. The space does matter as without it, it moves the article to the front of the sort order. In this edit, the last name is Doctora and not Jr.

Has Pam bugged you lately? If not, I'll make sure she does. We both need to bug you more often. Bgwhite (talk) 06:26, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's good to see you back on my talk page. I haven't heard from Pam in a while.

Speedy deletion nomination of Mayu River[edit]

Hello MrNiceGuy1113,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Mayu River for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, [[:{{{article}}}]].

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, Gbawden (talk) 13:32, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Defaultsort/Persondata & Chinese/Korean surnames[edit]

Quick rule of thumb: in Chinese and Korean names, the portion of the name with more syllables is usually the given name. Virtually all Chinese and Korean surnames are one syllable, with very few exceptions (Ouyang, Namgung, and Hwangbo are the only ones you're likely to ever encounter). Hyphenated surnames are extremely uncommon in these countries and in virtually all cases if you see a hyphen, it is being used to join the two syllables of the given name. Thanks for your contribution to the Felsenburg (Kandergrund) article. Unfortunately, the information and pictures you added were of other Felsenburg Castles. Most of the material you added belonged to Felsenburg (Bern). The picture Reichsburg-Trifels.jpg was of a castle on a rocky spire (literally a Felsenburg) named Trifels Castle.Tobyc75 (talk) 03:45, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Careful with the defaultsorts[edit]

Careful with the defualtsorts. This edit you had their wrong last name and the should be no accents. It should be sorted: Chaparro, Janelee Spanish names often have two last names.

Other than bugging you again. How have you been? I see you are still editing hundreds of pages a day. I hope you are enjoying your work.

Thanks for this piece of info.
Editing hundreds of pages on end is surely not all fun, but what saves me is occasional messages like yours. It reminds me I am not the only one doing this.
Many thanks

Chasing each other[edit]

I guess you're doing the same thing as me - working through the Category:Pages with missing references list to correct them.

I don't want to bitch, but it does seem that on more than one occasion you've been too hasty, and committed without checking results. For instance The Grapes of Wrath (film) - it quite clearly states at the end what the problem was (needed a {{reflist|group=amazon}}) but all you did was insert another {{reflist}} immediately before the one that was there, which didn't cure anything.

I take this exercise as an opportunity to apply other edits to the article too, if it grabs my fancy. So in this example (The Grapes of Wrath (film)) the simple solution would be just to do what the error message tells you. But the longer solution, and probably what the original author wanted, is to remove the group name from the <ref>.

I'm also keen on articles having proper citations, which aren't dead, so I often try to clean the citations too. That usually involves a change from a straight [http://a.b.c xxxx] style to a full-blown {{cite web}} because then I can add a date showing when the link was last checked. Takes time.

Like I said, I'm not really bitching, but if you don't do it right, then you're wasting your time. John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Thu 11:19, wikitime= 03:19, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, you're not bitching or bothering at all. What you pointed out was, in fact, true and of great help. I didn't know about the adverse effect of such careless edits. I am happy you told me.
Thanks a lot

O 7[edit]

Hi MrNiceGuy1113,

I have seen your edits and thx for correcting grammar errors. English is not native to me. Perhaps you could also have a look at ″O 1″ - ″O 6″ that I also created recently.

About the new layout I am not sure. It is my understanding that important dates are to be integrated in the text see French battleship Charlemagne under ″Construction and career″ for an example. Plus they are also listed orderly in the infobox.

The source of the information is the link given under ″External links″.
