Question from Cwithav1981 (00:28, 22 July 2025)
[edit]Hello,
I was trying to put an entry on Jon Lindstrom's page about a role he had in a lifetime movie and I somehow messed up the whole page layout --Cwithav1981 (talk) 00:28, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Cwithav1981, it looks like you had some issues with the table syntax (and a bracket for the wikilink). In particular, as you removed the table-closing syntax
|}
, the table was not closed (ended) and the rest of the article was moved into the table. I've fixed this for you. Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 22:14, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
Question from MathewPregasen (22:06, 22 July 2025)
[edit]Hi Tol,
I write a lot about technology and would like to contribute more to Wikipedia. In most cases, I want to opt to citing documentation and other impartial, non-profit sources. In some cases, complex topics are far better articulated in content I've contributed to. I don't want to be self-promotional in any way, but is it appropriate to cite those sources whenever it could be considered the best source?
Looking for any feedback here, Mathew --MathewPregasen (talk) 22:06, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @MathewPregasen; welcome to Wikipedia! The short answer is yes, but be cautious and reasonable. This is addressed in the conflict of interest guideline; particularly the section on self-citation. Such citations would, like any other, need to be considered reliable by our standards. Also, in regards to citing documentation: such sources would probably be considered primary, and hence not independent — that does not make them automatically unreliable, and they can be used for some claims, but articles should be primarily based on independent sources. (Technical jargon and excessive details should also generally be avoided, as Wikipedia is a general-purpose encyclopaedia; if independent coverage on certain content is minimal, such content is likely too detailed.) Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 22:28, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
