فیلم‌های ضدجنگ ممکن است درگیری‌های مسلحانه را به معنای کلی مورد انتقاد قرار دهند تا نشان دهند که جنگ بیهوده و ضرری برای همه طرف‌های درگیر است، در حالی که سایر فیلم‌ها بر اعمالی در یک جنگ خاص تمرکز می‌کنند، مانند استفاده از گازهای سمی یا کشتار نسل‌کشی غیرنظامیان.
