For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.

Während die Republik Kuba unter der verschärften See-Blockade der USA und den ständigen Provokationen der amerikanischen Söldner zu leiden hatte, lief am 27. Oktober 1962 das größte Urlauberschiff der DDR, die "Völkerfreundschaft" in der kubanischen Hauptstadt ein. Die Mannschaft und die 550 Passsagiere wurden von der Bevölkerung Havannas mit großem Jubel empfangen. Für sie stellte der Besuch einen Ausdruck der internationalen Solidarität dar. Die "Völkerfreundschaft" wurde bei ihrer Fahrt nach Kuba von einem Marineflugzeug der USA-Luftstreitkräfte und von einem USA-Torbedoboot-Zerstörer bedroht.
UBz: Am 27.10.62 überflog ein Flugzeug der USA-Kriegsmarine dreimal in provokatorischer Weise die "Völkerfreundschaft".

English: Zentralbild, Hanke, 1962-11-28 – “Völkerfreundschaft” defies US pirates.
While the Republic of Cuba has to suffer the intensified sea blockade and permanent provocations of the american mercenaries, on October 27th 1962 East Germany's biggest holiday ship “Völkerfreundschaft” arrives in the Cuban capital. The Crew and its 550 passengers was welcomed with great cheer by the population of Havana. For them is was an expression of international solidarity. On its way the “Völkerfreundschaft” was threatened by a navy airplane of the US Air Force and a US torpedo boat. Our Picture shows: On October 27th 1962 an airplane of the US Navy provocatively overflew the “Völkerfreundschaft” three times.
