The following is a list of the 3,143 counties and county-equivalents in the 50 states and District of Columbia sorted by U.S. state, plus an additional 100 county-equivalents in the U.S. territories sorted by territory.[1][2]

The State of Alabama comprises 67 counties.

Alaska

The State of Alaska comprises 19 organized boroughs and 1 unorganized borough, the latter divided into 11 unorganized census areas.[a]

American Samoa

The Territory of American Samoa has 14 counties; however, these counties are not counted by the U.S. Census Bureau (they are treated as minor civil divisions).[2] The U.S. Census Bureau counts the 3 districts and 2 atolls of American Samoa as county-equivalents.[1][2]

California

Colorado

The State of Colorado comprises 64 counties, including two consolidated city-county governments.

Connecticut

In the State of Connecticut, the U.S. Census Bureau began to formally recognize the state's 9 councils of government as county-equivalents on June 6, 2022, instead of Connecticut's eight historical counties. The eight historical counties continue to exist in name only, and are no longer considered for statistical purposes.[3]
