Il Premio Nobel per la Letteratura (in svedese Nobelpriset i litteratur) viene assegnato ogni anno dall'Accademia svedese.

Ogni anno, l'Accademia svedese invia regolarmente richieste di nomina di candidati al Premio Nobel per la letteratura. I membri dell'Accademia, i membri di accademie e società di letteratura, professori di letteratura e lingua, ex premi Nobel per la letteratura e presidenti di organizzazioni di scrittori possono nominare un candidato. Non è consentita la nomina di se stessi.[1]

Le registrazioni delle candidature sono tenute segrete per 50 anni, e successivamente vengono rese pubbliche. Attualmente sono disponibili le candidature presentate dal 1901 al 1972.[2]

Sebbene il seguente elenco sia composto da importanti figure letterarie ritenute degne del premio, ci sono stati alcuni celebri scrittori che non sono stati considerati e nemmeno nominati come Anton Čechov,[3] Jules Verne, Mark Twain, Robert Hugh Benson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Aleksandr Blok, Marcel Proust, Joseph Conrad, Rainer Maria Rilke, Federico García Lorca, Lu Xun, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Antonio Machado, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Simone Weil, Willa Cather, George Orwell, Galaktion Tabidze, Richard Wright, Flannery O'Connor, Langston Hughes e Jack Kerouac.[4][5][6]

Dal 1901 al 1971, ci sono stati 787 scrittori provenienti da diverse parti del mondo nominati per il Premio Nobel per la Letteratura, 67 dei quali hanno ricevuto il premio, mentre Albert Schweitzer è stato insignito del Premio Nobel per la Pace nel 1953. Altri 12 scrittori già candidati hanno ottenuto il premio dopo il 1971, mentre Elie Wiesel è stato insignito del Premio Nobel per la Pace nel 1986. Solo 72 donne erano state nominate per il premio a partire da Malwida von Meysenbug che è stata nominata ne 1901. Nel 1916 è stata nominata una società letteraria, la Pali Text Society.
